Middle School Maintenance Position

Department: Maintenance
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Harvard-Westlake School is seeking a reliable maintenance person with wide-ranging abilities. This person is an integral part of a team that handles the plant operations of the school through janitorial, plumbing, simple electrical, painting, and general handyman-type projects. We’re looking for a team player with the ability to work independently.


This position requires a lot of flexibility: having good hand skills is important, but equally important is the willingness to do whatever is required to ensure that the school's facilities and grounds are clean and in good operating order, that the department is prepared for all major events, and that the procedures and processes are functioning as designed.

Skills Needed:
We are looking for someone skilled/semi-skilled in the related fields:

  • Ability to handle janitorial needs for a busy campus is a must
  • Time management and multitasking skills in order to successfully complete maintenance requests, assigned duties, and school event set-ups all within a day’s work.
  • Customer Service Oriented
  • Employees are in constant motion, are on their feet all day, and must be able to climb stairs and frequently lift up to 50lbs
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with all types of lumber, steel studs, fasteners, hand and power tools, laser levels, and saws
  • Ability to assemble furniture pieces as needed, locker repair, doors and window frames is a plus but not required
  • Comfortable working with light electrical, plumbing, drywalling/painting, carpentry, tiling, welding, knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration is a plus but not required, and handyman skills

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Use tools such as a leaf blower, broom, and dustpan to clean assigned areas daily, including collecting trash
  • Preventative maintenance to buildings and grounds
  • Complete maintenance requests, which may include changing light bulbs, using ladders, minor plumbing repairs, hanging bulletin boards, minor electrical repairs, delivering heavy boxes of copy paper, hanging pictures in offices, cleaning up after sick students, unclogging toilets, help park visitors during school functions, and responding to emergency calls
  • Collect boxes (often heavy) from receiving department and deliver them to staff all around campus
  • Set up and staffing for events: often includes building and moving heavy stage platforms, pressure wash the campus in preparation of events, setting up hundreds of folding chairs, pipe and drape, and necessary sandbags for ballast, moving aluminum tables from storage and returning them following the event
  • Identify and report maintenance issues while out in the field in relation to electricity, plumbing, fire system, etc.
  • Construct, maintain, and repair various types of buildings and other structures within campus grounds.
  • Under supervision, provides general carpentry work in order to provide maintenance and renovation of campus-wide buildings and structures

Schedule:
Monday through Friday: Typically 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, or 6:30 am to 3:30 pm with slight variations.
Note: Some paid overtime will be required beyond the regular workday, including evenings and weekends to support school events.


Compensation: This is a non-exempt position. Estimated base compensation for this role is $23.00 per hour to $26.00 per hour, depending on experience.
