We are looking for an exceptional and highly qualified educator for a school-wide Speech Coach and Middle School Public Speaking Teacher. The position will begin in August for the 2026-27 school year.
Harvard-Westlake School consists of two campuses--a middle school of 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, and an upper school of 10th. 11th, and 12th grades; interested candidates should have the ability and interest to work with all grade levels, overseeing separate middle and high school speech teams. We are looking for someone with demonstrated knowledge of and passion for coaching competitive speech and classroom teaching.
Serve as the head coach for our competitive speech teams
Run effective after-school practice and training sessions at the middle and upper school campuses
Hire and supervise assistant speech coaches
Travel with speech team members to competitions
Teach two sections per quarter of 8th grade Public Speaking class as a member of the Interdisciplinary Studies and Independent Research Department
A Bachelor’s degree related to the field (Master’s degree preferred)
Experience teaching and coaching middle and high school students
Experience in one or more competitive speech events (e.g., original oratory, interpretation, extemporaneous speaking, etc.)
A student-centered approach that actively engages student voice
Strong teamwork, organization, and collegiality
A deep commitment to subject expertise
Clear and thoughtful communication with students, parents, and colleagues
Enthusiasm for becoming an engaged member of a vibrant school community
All full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in the broader life of the school. Responsibilities include:
Chaperoning a grade-level retreat in October
Leading an advisory or supervising lunch (twice in the 8-day cycle)
Engaging in school life through admissions, student clubs, affinity groups, service, and other community programs.
Harvard-Westlake is an independent school with two campuses in Los Angeles and approximately 1,600 students enrolled in grades 7–12. Anticipated base compensation: $85,000–$115,000, depending on experience.
Start date: August 2026 for the 2026–27 school year.
