Substitute Teacher

Location: Studio City, CA

We are looking for exceptional and highly qualified educators to serve as substitute teachers for the 2026-2027 school year. Our goal is to develop a pool of qualified substitutes that we can call on when needed.
Harvard-Westlake enrolls students in grades 7-12 on two separate campuses: Middle School (Holmby Hills) and Upper School (Studio City). Our middle school consists of 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, and our upper school houses grades 10, 11, and 12. We are looking for qualified individuals who have an interest and experience in teaching any of the core subjects (English, math, history, science, and world languages) and/or any of our elective courses in visual arts, performing arts, journalism, etc. For a full list of courses and to consider where you would be most prepared to help, please consult our academic course catalog.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the academic discipline you would like to serve as a substitute in; MA preferred
  • Experience in teaching middle or high school students
  • A student-centered approach, creating an environment that engages student voices.
  • Strong teamwork skills and demonstrated collegiality and organization.
  • Flexibility to adjust to the varied demands of different classroom settings, including the ability to read and follow another teacher’s lesson plans
  • Ability to communicate concepts clearly and concisely to students and foster a collaborative and creative learning environment.

Process

Interested candidates should complete the online application and upload a resume and cover letter. In the cover letter, please list your availability, the courses, and grade levels you feel most qualified to teach.

We will interview qualified candidates, screening them generally and, where appropriate, through department-specific conversations.

Candidates selected for the substitute teacher talent pool will be asked to complete employment eligibility requirements, including reference checks, background screening, and onboarding paperwork. Because substitute teaching assignments often arise on short notice, these requirements must be completed in advance of any confirmed employment or assignment. Only candidates who have successfully completed all pre-employment and onboarding requirements will be eligible to accept substitute teaching opportunities as they become available.

We are an independent school consisting of two campuses located in Los Angeles, California. We have approximately 1,600 curious, thoughtful, and inspiring students enrolled in grades seven through twelve.

Compensation

The substitute pay rate is $40 per hour with a minimum 4-hour guarantee per day. Compensation for long-term substitutes (two weeks or more) is based on a prorated annual salary of $85,000.
